An opportunity to obey Jesus

An opportunity to obey Jesus has come up and we need your participation! A young girl is being released from Marion Count jail on Monday. she will have nothing; no clothes, no place to live, yes she will literally walk out of jail with the clothes on her back and nothing else. An apartment is available for $400 a month, she will be living with 2 other women in recovery and she will be held accountalble in several different ways. We have 5 small groups at church, this includes the small group that meets at the building and the young professionals group. Is it possible that your small group could collect at least $75 to help this young lady? This will go specifically to pay her rent, we have contributors from other places to help get her started as far as food and clothing are concerned.

This young girl is 25, she has been in jail since February due to drug addiction and probation violation. Both of her parents died of drug overoses or complications of drug abuse. Her little brother, age 20, hung himself in July of this year due to drug addiction. Her entire life on this planet has been plagued with consequences of drug addiction.

She has done this in jail by working the 12 steps with Jesus Christ and accepting Jesus as her Lord. However, living in the real world will be difficult. So will you go to the Father as a group and pray for her to surrender fully to our Lord? This morning God showed me this scripture:

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in downtown Ocala, Thanksgiving comes early. A crowd gathered by the Gazebo on the Square as displays were sorted and tables arranged. A newly installed Ferris wheel served as a festive backdrop for the activity; a main winter attraction for holiday revelers after the Light Up Ocala traditional ceremony. But on this day the focus is on Ocala’s lesser known, or seen, sons and daughters. Those most people tend to ignore or shun. The occasion facilitated Ocala’s downtrodden – the homeless.

The Maricamp Road Church of Christ (Church) held its first annual Thanksgiving on the Square which provided food and clothing for the area’s homeless population followed by a worship service prayer. Church members cooked food and donated clothes. Some were collected in an previous Fall Festival event sponsored by the Church attended by 350 people the day before Halloween; others were collected on the spot.

The final tally according to Jacob Medley, Church member and event organizer, was 240 meals served; 30 blankets, 22 sleeping bags and three racks of clothes – that included hats and jackets – all distributed.

For those who donated clothes at the Thanksgiving on the Square, Mojo’s Grill offered free appetizer cards; 75 total.

Church member and Interfaith distribution and center coordinator Tom Curtis said Interfaith donated the water. Asked why the volunteers felt compelled to help out with this event, Curtis shared “God is great, God is good. We try to exemplify the message to look out for our brothers and sisters, all of God’s children, everyday – 24/7.”

“It is great to be the hands and feet of Jesus” added Nancy Bryant, Church member in charge of clothes. So for the hard-working, conscientious volunteers they are doing the surrogate work of Jesus. Noble hearts. Noble deeds.

These actions form perceptions and future actions the Youth Ministers of the Church wish to pass on to the next generation. Youth Minister John “Beef” Bernard shared they have had similar food and clothes drives in the past. “We want to motivate our youth group on the word of Christ; to serve others for Christ. Gives perspective on the needs of the community; and spreads the Gospel by action and word.”

The fellowship of the Church volunteers and generous supporters was heart-felt by the homeless community. Many battling addiction and depression need the encouragement and support they receive from the volunteers to pick themselves up. Others were there as families; a casualty of the recession. Having lost their jobs, their possessions and finally their homes, these unfortunates began to lose hope. But the help of others restores their hope, so that they may turn their situations around.

In short, faith restores fate.

Fenton Jackson has much to be thankful for. He was homeless but through his faith in God and help received from the fellowship of Maricamp Road Church of Christ he turned his life – and fate – around. “I became a member a year and a half ago, dedicated really for the past year. I quit drinking and smoking, generally abusing my mind and body, and God restored my clarity.” Jackson lives with his brother and is an active member of the Church. He is thankful for a big turnout and feels it is good to give back what was so freely given to him by helping others in need.

Carter Robison :: Dominican Republic Mission Trip

Hey Dad, just a little update on what we are doing down here. First week was East Hill Church of Christ from York, Nebraska. During this week had community day, VBS days, went to the dump and hospital in Puerto Plata and had some serious work days. In one work day, we planted 100 palm trees and planted some plants making an entrance into Rio San Juan. We also are in the process of making a sidewalk in front of the hospital in Rio San Juan that will go beside the palm trees that we planted. It was an awesome experience because not only did we work with the group from York, but we work side-by-side with other Dominicans that came to help us. As we planted these trees next to a busy highway, the natives would slow down and stare at what we were doing for their town, and many would show their appreciation as they drove by. Planting 100 palm trees in one day, was an exhausting experience but well worth it to see the look on the faces of the Dominicans. There are so many other stories I could share, but will save for another e-mail because I am limited with the time. However, I am so blessed to be down here! Miss and love everyone back home!
