1. When you think of “church” what are the very first thoughts that come to your mind?
2. If you were talking to an acquaintance about “church” what are the things you would share?
3. Do you think our “common language” about “church” more accurately reflects:
a. Our common understanding of the word or…
b. May reveal a flaw in our view of “church from Jesus” perspective?
c. Why is it important that our words accurately reflect Jesus intent? How does
that affect our lifestyle in the church?
DIG:
1. What do you consider the most significant thing about Peter’s saying that Jesus “was the Christ” (the anointed one; the Messiah) the son of the living God? Why is that statement so foundation to Jesus “building” his church?
2. Why would Jesus words about, “His suffering, being killed and being raised” upset Peter so much?
a. Why do you suppose Jesus used such strong language like (Satan, Adversary)
in confronting Peter about his statement?
b. What is significant about seeing “church” from God’s perspective rather than
man’s perspective?
3. How does Jesus statement in Matthew 16:21 impact his statement in Matthew 16:24?
a. If we like Peter can’t accept his statement about himself in 16:21, can or will we
accept the statement in 16:24?
b. What might be the significance of Jesus words, “you must deny yourself and take up His cross” being bracketed by the words.” If any man would come after me “and” follow me?
