Lyrics to Lee Ann Womack – “I Hope You Dance”

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance

Chorus:

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance,
I hope you dance (dance),  I hope you dance (dance)
I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin’ might mean takin’ chances, but they’re worth takin’
Lovin’ might be a mistake but it’s worth makin’
Don’t let some hell bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out, reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance,
I hope you  dance..(time is a wheel in constant motion always)
I  hope you  dance..(rolling along)
I hope you dance…(tell me who wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance…(where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance,
And when  you get the choice to sit it out or dance,

OPEN:

1. What do you think is the intent of the song?

2. How does it make you feel? What does it motivate you to do?

3. What do you think was the intent of Psalm 8; Psalm 19?

a. How do they make you feel? What do they motivate you to do?
b. What was one of King David’s responses of “wonder”?
(II Samuel 6:14,15; 21,22)

DIG:

1.Read 4 Resurrection accounts in the Gospels

Matthew 28:1-10
Mark 16:1-8
Luke 24:1-12
John 20:1-9
Talk about the elements of “wonder” Concerning the resurrection in each one?

2. How does a sense of “wonder” incorporate the concept of “fear” as seen in these

accounts:
Matthew 28:4 ( afraid of him)
Matthew 28: 5,10 ( Do Not be afraid)
Mark 16:8
Luke 24:5
Matthew 28:8 ( afraid but filled with joy)

a. “Wonder – Evoking” words that accompany fear
Mark 16:5,6 “alarmed, trembling, bewildered”
Luke 24:4-12 “wondering, fright, wondering to himself”
b. In Hebrew culture, scripture, “fear much more than being scared”

Here’s the thing: It includes all the emotions that accompany being scared – disorientation, not knowing what’s going to happen, the realization that there is far more here than we had any idea of. But tht “more and other” is God” (Ergene Peterson, Living the Resurrection)

3. How should all these feelings and concepts concerning the Resurrection affect us in living the “Life of the Resurrection”? (See. Romans 6:4,5; 11-13)

Reflect / Apply:

1. What are some things you can do to “keep your sense of wonder” about the resurrection alive?

2. Name something you can do this week that would renew your sense of wonder that might have a lasting impact on you and others?
