Just for the record, I do not intend on using this blog to just be a sounding board when I am frustrated; however, the timing is right and here I go again.
I have been taking one class per semester at various colleges for about 20 years now and I will probably keep taking classes for 20 more. It is something I enjoy and I love to learn new things. The current class I’m taking had me reading all about “The Dawn of History” from Homo Erectus to Homo Sapiens. It amazed me how much “scientific fact” was nothing more than someone’s educated opinion, but we are supposed to accept it (and be tested on it) as if it were the gospel truth. The following was part of my response to this week’s homework assignment which is posted for the teacher and all the other students to read and critique. I was the first to complete the assignment so I haven’t had any response yet, but I’m sure it will go against the grain for some.
“Being someone who has a creationist viewpoint versus that of evolution; this was an interesting chapter to read. One of the things that struck me was the constant use of phrases like “we know very little…” or “may have been…” The other thing I noticed was changes from the previous edition of this textbook, “In this edition we have shifted…” and “In earlier editions of this book this was called…” All of this leads me to believe that prior to the written language, most of what we “know” today is speculation; however, I will admit they are making “educated guesses.” The time period prior to the written language, in my opinion, would be the area most vulnerable to change. It is in this era where the theory can be made a scientific “fact” without the proof in writing. Just because science says it is so doesn’t mean it is always correct (remember it was science who stated the earth was flat and the universe revolved around the earth.)…”
I can hear some professors saying “oh, here we go again” but, how is it different for me to accept their theories than it is for them to accept mine. Aren’t both (creation versus evolution) based on faith, based on the unknown, based on the unseen. How many times has the scientific version been modified over the years once “new discoveries” were made? How many times has the story of creation been changed over the years… let me think; none! Have I made my point yet or am I just rambling on in frustration. This has made me realize that I need to start saving right now for my daughters education if I intend for them to go to a Christian college so they can get an eternal education and not just one on the latest theories.
I have taken classes with this professor before and I must admit I have “gone off” in his forums in the past. For the record, he not only allows it but he encourages this type of behavior. I only hope I can portray the other side of the coin in a respectful manner and not come off “sounding like some nutcase.” Maybe it is because I’m a little older and less intimidated than I used to be, but I have a hard time having someone else tell me what the “facts” are when their theory is based just as much on faith as mine.
By the way, for those that have read my other posts, I finally got that song out of my head. This week for some reason, I have the song “Stand up, stand up for Jesus” rumbling around my brain. At least this time the use of the Lord’s name is in a positive note and not a negative one. For now, I will leave you with this thought…” be not ashamed.”
